Evan Mack is the composer and librettist of Angel of the Amazon which premiered in May 2011 by Encompass New Opera Theatre at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City and has been released worldwide by Albany Records. Since then, he teamed up with librettist, Joshua McGuire to write theatre grounded in climactic expression that delivers larger-than-life stories and music that harnesses the full athletic thrill of singing. The Secret of Luca, which premiered by Fresno State Opera Theatre in 2014. In August 2016, their American grand
opera, Roscoe, premiered at the Seagle Music Colony to rave reviews. It later received a concert performance with the Albany Symphony and Met Opera superstar Deborah Voigt. In between these two large-scale projects, Mack & McGuire also found time to compose the first- ever opera for Twitter, #IsOperaDead—an opera in 5 acts lasting one minute and forty seconds. Their latest enterprise is a multi-cultural Christmas opera for children, Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena, which will premiere to thousands of children on both coasts in the 2016-17 season. Mack & McGuire are currently drafting a new one-act opera entitled The Ghosts of Gatsby, slated to premiere in 2018. Individually and together, their work has appeared at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, the Seagle Music Colony, Winspear Opera House, Washington National Opera, Atlanta Opera, Glimmerglass, and numerous colleges and universities.
Evan was a composing fellow at the John Duffy Composers Institute and a resident artist at Yaddo. He is currently published with Hal Leonard, Alfred, and Amazon with text settings of Mark Jarman, Ignazio Silone, William Kennedy, Ovid, and Langston Hughes. Mack’s setting of Justice Anthony Kennedy’s ruling on same-sex marriage, A Little More Perfect is slated for publication in 2017.
