ARDEA ARTS - Opera Out of Bounds
Executive & Artistic Director
New York
I am a stage director and choreographer working in opera since the early 1980's. Among my most memorable jobs are working with Leonard Bernstein, Gian Carlo Menotti, Lou Reed, and Placido Domingo at opera companies from L.A., HGO, to La Scala; The Electric Ordo Virtutum at Lincoln Center Festival; and a year as an originating cast member of Robert Wilson and Philip Glass's "Einstein on the Beach" - touring to major opera houses all over Europe, and ending with two performances at the Metropolitan Opera House!!! As the original founder of American Opera Projects, I've been fostering and collaborating on making new American opera for diverse audiences of all ages and from all walks of life since 1988. As a mother of three children, I created the Family Opera Initiative In 1995 to make high quality repertory for family audiences ages 6-106. In 2006, I founded Ardea Arts "Opera Out Of Bounds." From the very beginning I worked with women composers, and the companies I founded and led have always embraced Inclusion, Diversity and Accessibility, long before they became buzz words. My current project underway is "BOUNCE The Basketball Opera" - An American story told through basketball. Using contemporary music from today's world, BOUNCE addresses themes of Social Justice, Gun Violence, Accountability, and Recovery from Trauma. It is played on a basketball court, whereever they may be, with a cast of professional singers and basketball players. BOUNCE brings together people who have never done anything together, in an authentic and meaningful way. A powerful community program emanates from BOUNCE. The Brooklyn Nets is one of our major sponsors, and we have been supported by Opera America, the NEA and many other foundations and individuals. We are seeking producers. Please do talk to me about possibilities to bring it to your city and communities.
I look forward to meeting old friends and colleagues, and discovering new. SEE YOU AT THE FORUM!! And next time you are in NYC, please do come visit us at the Ardea Arts studio in SoHo, NYC - 463 Broome St. Studio 1A, NYC 10013. Give me a call or text at 917-690-0272. www.ardeaarts.com
